Bruce was born in 1957 in Cornwall, Ontario and grew up in the east end of Ottawa. He spent the summers in Ontario cottage country working as a lifeguard and dishwasher at a local summer camp.
He started hitchhiking when he was fourteen and logged thousands of miles in the early ‘70s before joining the Canadian Armed Forces at age seventeen.
During an active career with the Royal Canadian Regiment and the Intelligence Branch, he served in Northern Norway, Cyprus, Germany, Washington D.C., the Balkans and the Middle East. He also found time to complete a BA in History from the University of Manitoba. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Cross in 1990 and retired as a Master Warrant Officer in 2005.
He married his high school sweetheart and has a son, a daughter, and two grandchildren. He currently lives in Kingston, Ontario, just across the border from the Adirondacks.
